Doctors performed an emergency delivery Wednesday after a pregnant Cuyahoga Falls woman was seriously injured in a crash in Mogadore, according to reports.
Sgt. Craig Polasky of the Ohio State Highway Patrol’s Canton post said the baby was close to full term when the crash occurred.
The 28-year-old mother was not in labor when her vehicle struck another on state Route 532. However, she was seriously injured, leading doctors to deliver the child immediately, Polasky said.
“The severity of her injuries led doctors to take the baby out,” he said. “The baby is in the NICU and the mother is critical in the ICU for surgery.”
He said the baby is “alive and well,” but he was unsure of the child’s sex.
The crash occurred about 3:45 p.m. on State Route 532 north of Idella Street. The woman’s vehicle, a Honda Civic, drifted about 3 feet left of center and collided with a southbound Ford F-150, whose 66-year-old driver suffered minor injuries, according to authorities.
The woman was transported to Summa Akron City Hospital, troopers reported. The baby is in the neonatal intensive care unit at Akron Children’s Hospital.
