Find out why crime busters do the math

Science Cafe Cleveland meets on the second Monday of each month at the Music Box Supper Club on the west bank of the Flats. This month’s speaker, on The Mathematics of Crime, is Dr. Andrea Bertozzi, professor of mathematics at UCLA, who will talk about how law enforcement agencies are partnering with mathematicians and social scientists for “predictive policing,” identifying areas where crimes are likely to occur. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the presentation at 7. Admission is free; food and beverages will be available for purchase.

Be on the lookout for Hinckley’s buzzards

Here’s something to do Tuesday, but you’ll need to make plans today: Cleveland Metroparks will have an official spotter at the Buzzard Roost in the Hinckley Reservation in northern Medina County at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday to see if the buzzards return. (Not as romantic as swallows coming back to Capistrano, but they’re all we’ve got.) 440-526-1012 or www.clevelandmetroparks.com.
