Many don’t recognize the oval sugar cookies with pink swaths of icing.
Then they see the other cellophane-wrapped treats — easily identifiable women’s breasts and men’s genitalia.
“Something clicks and people are like, ‘oh, oh...cookie vaginas!’ ” said, Rachel Whinnery, 27, of Akron.
Whinnery isn’t a professional baker. She’s a freelance marketer who began making and selling hundreds of sex-themed cookies to raise money for Planned Parenthood after Donald Trump was elected president.
She sold more than $500 worth of cookies in Cleveland last week and hopes to exceed that Friday when she’ll be peddling her “lady and man bits” cookies — and some from Sweet Mary’s Bakery in downtown Akron — outside Revival clothing in Highland Square.
Whinnery came up with the idea after she saw a social media post encouraging Trump opponents to pick a single issue to support in the coming year.
To represent Planned Parenthood’s reproductive health care, Whinnery and her friend Kayla Grise of Cleveland found cookie cutters depicting a woman’s breasts and a man’s penis and testicles. There were no vagina cookie cutters, so they improvised.
Whinnery calls the fundraising effort #GrabMyCookie , a reference to the Access Hollywood tape that revealed Trump talking about grabbing women’s genitalia.
She also wanted to make cat cookies to swap out for the slang term Trump used. When the cookie cutter she ordered didn’t ship in time, Whinnery turned to Hobby Lobby, the Christian-owned arts and crafts chain with faith objections to the birth control coverage requirement under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare.
“That’s the only store that sold a cat face, so that’s where I went,” Whinnery said. “The irony, right?”
