WADSWORTH: The city will celebrate the resurfacing of the main runway at the Wadsworth Municipal Airport with a ribbon cutting at 11 a.m. Saturday.

The $866,640 project, completed by Shelly Construction, involved new underdrains, pavement repairs, milling and two courses of asphalt on the 3,800-foot runway.

The Federal Aviation Administration and Ohio Department of Transportation paid 95 percent of the cost.

“The runway had last been resurfaced in the late 1980s or early 1990s, so it was due for repairs,” city Public Service Director Robert Patrick said in a prepared statement. “We were grateful to have received the two grants, particularly as we are seeing increased community activity at the airport. The strong attendance at this year’s Props & Pistons Festival is just one example of that.”

The airport, 840 Airport Drive, is owned by the city and managed by Wadsworth Flight Services. It is located off Interstate 76 a few miles southwest of downtown.

“The new runway will provide smooth flight operations for the many daily aircraft movements at the airport,” WFS managing partner Jason Lorenzon said.
