Akron-based Buckeye State Credit Union has a new chief executive officer.

Jennifer Borowy, formerly senior vice president for retail sales and marketing for the credit union, was named to the top spot on Oct. 22. She replaces Francis Odhiambo, who left the credit union after about two years. Borowy was named interim CEO for a week after Odhiambo’s departure and then named to the permanent position. Borowy said she worked closely with Odhiambo in the last year.

She takes over a credit union with $90 million in deposits, five branches in Akron, Canton, Alliance, Shaker Heights and Painesville, an administrative headquarters on Voris Street in Akron and 50 employees.

The Green native graduated from Walsh University and also received her MBA in business management from Walsh.

She joined Buckeye State Credit Union in January with a banking background after having spent eight years with National City and PNC. She left PNC as vice president and branch manager for the Fairlawn PNC branch.

Borowy declined to say her age, but acknowledged she has advanced her career quickly and brings more of a millennial approach.

“Our goal for 2017 is to get out in to the community and make an influential difference that will change lives. Buckeye State Credit Union went through a rebranding effort in 2016, and our Million Dollar Challenge was just the beginning,” Borowy said, referring to a credit union goal to save $1 million by the end of year for its members.

Members were encouraged to look at their accounts and loans at the credit union as well as other financial institutions and consider refinancing or opening new accounts with lower interest rates to save money. The credit union has saved its members $1.6 million and now has a new goal to save $2 million by the end of the year, Borowy said.

“I am here to be an advocate for the credit union community because we have the creative solutions to empower our members to take back control of their financial freedom. We pride ourselves on ‘Building Financial Security Together’ and I am thrilled to be a part of this movement,” she said.

Said Buckeye State Credit Union Board President Dave Nero: “Jennifer has been an instrumental leader and delivered significant results for Buckeye State Credit Union in 2016. The board is confident that Jennifer has the drive, strong leadership skills, and innovation to execute the strategies we need to propel Buckeye in to the future.”

Borowy lives in Green with her husband and two children.
