CLEVELAND: A young man who killed a teenage boy at an Ohio sandwich shop and agreed to spend the rest of his life in prison has apologized to the boy’s family and asked for forgiveness at sentencing.

Twenty-year-old Daveion Perry sat expressionless during Friday’s hearing in Cleveland while statements from 15-year-old Sunny Ravi Patel’s parents and relatives were read aloud in court.

Perry pleaded guilty to aggravated murder and other charges Wednesday and agreed to a sentence of life without parole to avoid the death penalty.

Perry entered a Mr. Hero sandwich shop in Cleveland Heights on Oct. 14 and seconds later fired a shot that struck Sunny in the back of the head.

Police arrested Perry two nights later after an attempted robbery at a Dollar General store.
