The Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the Akron man killed in a police-involved shooting on Sunday as Philip B. Hasan, 61.
Akron Police reported an officer fired at Hasan, of the 1000 block of Florida Avenue in Akron’s Kenmore neighborhood, after he disobeyed commands and reached for a semiautomatic rifle in his vehicle. Police had been called to respond to an alleged violent altercation between Hasan and his downstairs neighbor.
Hasan died at Cleveland Clinic Akron General Medical Center, where he was being treated for gunshot wounds to the chest.
According to a 911 recording released Monday, a man called shortly before 3:25 p.m. to request paramedics for his friend after Hasan allegedly slammed his arm in a car door. When police arrived, they said they found Hasan approaching his vehicle — which had an SKS rifle visible inside.
An eyewitness told WKYC (Channel 3) that police gave several warnings not to touch the gun, but Hasan did anyway. An officer responded by opening fire.
Both Hasan and the officer are black men. The officer, who has not been identified, was placed on paid administrative leave pending the investigation, in accordance with departmental policy.
Hasan’s criminal history prior to the call on Sunday was short. Last month, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives issued a federal warrant for his arrest related to alleged weapons violations. Court records in Summit County show only a speeding violation from 1993, and court records not listed online include charges of robbery from the 1970s.
Police continue to investigate the incident.
