Summit County Democrats have chosen Clair Dickinson to fill an at-large vacancy on County Council.

Dickinson, 65, of Akron, was selected Wednesday night to replace Ilene Shapiro, who was appointed county executive following the death of County Executive Russ Pry.

Dickinson, a partner with the law firm Brouse McDowell, will serve through December and must run in the November General Election to complete the remaining two years of Shapiro’s term.

Meanwhile, the Republican Party Executive Committee also met Wednesday and selected Alex Pavloff, 28, of Akron, as the Republican candidate for the seat.

“Summit County has given me so much I’d really like to start giving back,” said Pavloff, a graduate student getting his master’s degree in applied politics at the University of Akron. “I’d like to leave the place better than I found it.”

He’s also the head of the Summit County Young Republicans and son of former University of Akron Board of Trustees Chair Jonathan Pavloff.

He was unopposed for the opportunity to seek election to the seat in the fall.

Dickinson, a former Ohio 9th District Court of Appeals judge who previously served two stints on County Council, faced opposition from current District 1 Councilman Nick Kostandaras and local attorney Lisa Dean at the Democratic gathering.

“I enjoyed my involvement in county government in the past,” Dickinson said. “I’ve been out of public service for four years and I miss it.”
