Extreme heat and severe storms on way to Akron, National Weather Service warns

It will be heated and stormy in Northeast Ohio this weekend and it has nothing to do with the politics in Cleveland.

The National Weather Service warns that some of the warmest temperatures of the year and high humidity are heading to Northeast Ohio just in time for the weekend.

Severe storms — some that could pack high winds and hail — predicted for Friday will usher in “hot and humid” weather.

The National Weather Service has issued a “heat advisory” from 11 a.m. Friday to 9 p.m. Saturday.

Afternoon highs both days will be in the low to mid-90s.

This will push the heat index — what the temperatures feel like — to between 100 and 104 degrees.

The weather service warns that the high temperatures coupled with high humidity through the weekend will “make it feel very uncomfortable and increase the risk for heat stroke.”

The elderly and small children will be at risk for heat-related illnesses if they venture outdoors for too long.

Owners of pets are also advised to ensure the animals have plenty of water.

If you have to be outdoors, the National Weather Service says to try to reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or evening hours. You should also wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and drink plenty of water.
