Doughnut Day is here
Here’s an excuse to enjoy some sweet carbs: It’s National Doughnut Day. This food day has a long history, with the Salvation Army beginning it in 1938 to raise money for those in need during the Great Depression. It also was a nod to the Salvation Army’s workers who served coffee and doughnuts to soldiers in the trenches in the battlefields of France during World War I. Today, it’s a day of promotions. Dunkin Donuts, Krispy Kreme, Crest Bakery and Giant Eagle are among the shops offering various deals. Acknowledging history, Giant Eagle donates a portion of proceeds from doughnut sales to the Salvation Army.
