The Ohio Department of Transportation is delaying a planned closure of the Kenmore leg of Interstate 76 in Akron this weekend because of the threat of rain.

The state agency plans to re-stripe the highway so there are three lanes instead of two. The striping cannot happen in poor weather.

ODOT had planned to close the westbound lanes — which actually run south — from 7 p.m. Friday to 6 a.m. Monday.

Instead, the closure has been pushed off to next month. The state agency won’t work on the highway during the Memorial Day weekend.

ODOT said Friday morning that it will close the eastbound lanes — which run north — the weekends of June 3-6 and June 10-13, depending on the weather.

The earliest the westbound lanes will close now for the re-striping will be the weekend of June 17-20.

ODOT also said that the westbound lanes of I-76/77 between the Central Interchange and state Route 59 in Akron will be closed this weekend as expected.

The weather will not affect planned bridge work in that area.

That section of the highway will be shut down between 7 a.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Monday.
