COLUMBUS: Police say a suspect in shootings that killed a mother and critically injured her 3-year-old son in North Carolina has been arrested in central Ohio.

Columbus police say they arrested 24-year-old Nathaniel Elijah Dixon around 1 a.m. Friday. Police in Asheville, North Carolina, say Dixon is wanted there on charges of first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury in the Thursday shootings. Asheville police say Candace Pickens was found shot to death at a park and her three-year-old son was found shot in the head.

The Asheville man is in jail awaiting extradition proceedings to return him to North Carolina. It could not be determined immediately whether Dixon has an attorney.

Asheville investigators say Dixon fled to Columbus after the shooting.
