A federal appeals court has ordered U.S. District Judge John Adams in Akron to recuse himself after a criminal defendant said he regularly used heroin with the judge’s brother and nephew, Cleveland.com reported.

Eric Ramey was facing charges of creating and passing counterfeit money in Holmes County before Adams.

Last November, he wrote to the appeals court, saying he used heroin and opiates with Jerry Adams Sr. and Jerry Adams Jr. daily for 14 months.

The judge said in court papers he is estranged from his brother and nephew and refused to step down.

The appeals court ruled that Adams’ removal from Ramey’s case is warranted.
